How our measurements work

MeasureKind separates mathematical conversions from visual representations. The conversion result is calculated using unit factors; the illustration helps explain scale.

Length

Length conversions use meters as the internal base unit. For example, one inch is exactly 0.0254 meters, and one foot is exactly 0.3048 meters. Values shown on screen may be rounded for readability.

Area

Area conversions use square meters as the internal base unit. One international acre is 4,046.8564224 square meters, and one hectare is 10,000 square meters. A drawn rectangle is only one possible shape for a given area; the actual shape may differ.

Volume

Volume conversions use liters as the internal base unit. The US liquid gallon is different from the imperial gallon. Comparisons that use gallons on this website specify US gallons where applicable.

Rounding

Displayed values may be rounded to make them easier to read. Rounding affects presentation, not the conversion factors used in the calculation.

Visualizations

Visuals are illustrative, not calibrated to physical screen dimensions. Screen size, browser zoom, pixel density and display settings can change their apparent size. Use a calibrated instrument when precision matters.
